The partnership formed by Hugo Calderano and Bruna Takahashi, known as "Calderashi," has secured a spot in the grand final of the mixed doubles at the WTT Star Contender, held in São José dos Campos (SP). The Brazilian duo guaranteed their qualification after defeating the Hong Kong team, composed of Yiu Kwan To and Ng Wing Lam, 3 sets to 0, in a match played this Saturday (25).
With this result, the Brazilians, who occupy the second position in the world doubles ranking, will face the Japanese pair formed by Togami Shinsuke and Odo Satsuki in the battle for the title. The decisive clash is scheduled for 2:40 PM this Sunday (26).
In the semifinal, the Brazilian duo dominated the match with partials of 11/7, 12/10, and 11/9. The Japanese pair reached the final after surprising the sixth-best duo in the world, Wong Chin Ting and Doo Hoi Kem, from Hong Kong, with a 3-sets-to-1 victory.
The Calderashi partnership, which has been active for less than two years, has already accumulated important titles, such as the WTT Singapore Smash in February and gold at the Pan-American Table Tennis Championships, held last year in the United States.
In addition to their success in doubles, Hugo Calderano continues to seek individual results in the competition. After defeating Croatian Tomislav Pucar in the round of 16, the Brazilian, currently ranked number eight in the world, faces South Korean Oh Junsung tonight to try for a spot in the tournament's semifinals.
Meanwhile, Bruna Takahashi's journey in the women's singles bracket came to an end in the round of 16. The Brazilian athlete was defeated by German Nina Mittelham 3 sets to 2 in a tight duel, being eliminated from the individual competition.
