The Davis Cup, the premier men's national team tennis competition, is back in Brazil after a three-year hiatus. The tournament will be held at the Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, where the Brazilian team will face Switzerland for World Group I on September 18 and 19.
Tickets for the matches went on sale online this Tuesday (28). The schedule in Barra da Tijuca includes five matches played on an indoor hard court. On Friday (18), the program starts at 3:00 PM with two duels; on Saturday (19), the schedule begins at 2:00 PM with the doubles match, followed by two singles matches.
Among the most anticipated names for the national team is 19-year-old João Fonseca from Rio, currently Brazil's number 1 and 27th in the world rankings. The official list of called-up players will be released by captain Jaime Oncins ten days before the start of the competition.
The matchup is decisive for the future of the Brazilian team on the circuit. The winning team secures a spot in the first round of the 2027 qualifiers, a stage that provides access to the Davis Cup title race. On the other hand, the defeated side will move on to compete in the 2027 World Group I playoffs.
The history between the two teams shows a balance. In 1954, Brazil defeated Switzerland at home with three wins and one loss. In 1992, Switzerland, as the host, defeated the Brazilians five to zero.
The Brazilian team arrives for this matchup after being eliminated by Canada in the first round of this year's qualifiers in February. On that occasion, the team did not have the presence of João Fonseca, who played a fundamental role in Brazil's qualification for the qualifiers by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas last year.
