The state of São Paulo recorded a 7.3% reduction in the number of homicides during the first half of 2026, according to data released by the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP). With 1,149 murders recorded in the period, the rate represents the lowest level achieved since the series of reports began in 2001.
The drop is compared to the same interval in 2025, when 1,240 crimes were reported. The month of June also showed a significant decline, with 178 willful homicides recorded, which equates to a 16% decrease compared to the 212 cases that occurred in the same month of the previous year.
When analyzing the geographic distribution, the interior of São Paulo, comprising 606 municipalities, totaled 728 willful homicides between January and June. Meanwhile, the metropolitan region of São Paulo showed a 26.2% decline, going from 263 occurrences in 2025 to 194 cases this semester.
The capital of São Paulo also registered an improvement in security indicators. A total of 227 murders were recorded in the first six months of the year, an 8.4% reduction compared to the 248 cases recorded in the first half of 2025.
The Secretariat of Public Security attributes the reduction in crime rates to the employment of intelligence strategies in policing. According to the department, the focus on investigations targeting crimes against life and the execution of operations to remove criminals from the streets were fundamental to the results.
