Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recalled the Brazilian ambassador to Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, for diplomatic consultations following verbal attacks by Argentine President Javier Milei against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The decision marks a moment of tension between the two countries due to the statements made by the Argentine leader last Saturday (25).
Milei participated in the Liberal Party (PL) convention, held in São Paulo, to officialize Flávio Bolsonaro's candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic. During his speech, the Argentine leader directed direct insults at the Brazilian president, even calling him a "convict."
In addition to the attacks on Lula, the Argentine president also insulted Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Milei referred to the magistrate as "bald trash," due to the decision not to authorize a visit by Jair Bolsonaro to the justice's residence.
In response to the statements, the president of the STF, Edson Fachin, published an official note classifying the terms as a "disrespectful reference." Fachin stated that the manifestations are incompatible with the civility expected in relations between States and reinforced the autonomy of the Brazilian Judiciary.
In the diplomatic sphere, recalling an ambassador for consultations is a gesture that signals dissatisfaction and gravity in the bilateral relationship. Diplomat Julio Bitelli is expected to arrive in Brasília between Sunday night (26) and Monday morning (27).
