The Brazilian government announced the creation of a working group to boost negotiations for a trade agreement between Mercosur and South Korea. The measure, announced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this Monday (27), aims to identify sensitive points between the parties to unblock the process and strengthen economic integration between the South American bloc and the Asian country.
The meeting took place at the Alvorada Palace during the official visit of South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung to Brazil. According to President Lula, the coordination of this new working group will be under the responsibility of the Vice President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin.
For President Lee Jae-Myung, finalizing the agreement is an immediate priority, especially given current uncertainties in global trade. The South Korean leader highlighted that the partnership would open doors for Korean companies in the South American market and offer new prospects for access to the Asian market for Brazil.
In addition to the trade focus, the authorities discussed cooperation in the critical minerals sector. Both governments agreed to expand the partnership throughout the supply chain of these resources, leveraging Brazil's position as one of the main holders of these essential materials for modern industry.
The cooperation agenda also included the signing of several memorandums of understanding. Agreements were established for the exchange of experiences in educational policies, cooperation in peaceful space activities, and partnerships in research, development, and innovation aimed at the industrial sector.
In the fields of defense and sports, the countries also formalized cooperation agreements. The presidents further reinforced their mutual commitment to multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, defending the maintenance of democracy and peace among nations.
