Truck driver who died in Paraná hit by train was 100 meters from where he was going to stop

Driver dies after semi-truck crashes into train in Paraná André Baldessar, 40, was 100 meters away from his destination when he was involved in an accident with a train and died, in the District of Pirapó, in Apucarana, in Northern Paraná. Due to the impact, he was thrown from the truck he was driving.

RPC, an affiliate of TV Globo in Paraná, gathered at the scene that André had made a stop in Paranavaí to unload cardboard. Afterward, he was going to the company in Pirapó.

"We have no idea what happened. Because he slept all night, he stopped at the gas station early in the evening. [...] We always came here," said Willis Dias dos Santos, a friend of the victim. In the images, you can see when the truck prepares to cross the railroad tracks. Upon starting the crossing, the vehicle's cab is hit by the train. According to the Mobile Emergency Medical Service (Samu), André did not survive his injuries and died at the scene.

Read the statement in full below: "The concessionaire deeply laments the accident that occurred this Tuesday afternoon (16), around 12:20 PM, at a level crossing located in the District of Pirapó, in Apucarana (PR). The collision occurred after the truck advanced onto the level crossing at the moment of the approach of the railway composition, which was passing through the location using the standard train horn.

The engineer was surprised and there was not enough time to avoid the collision. The location where the accident occurred has regular railway signage, with vertical and horizontal devices intended to guide the safe crossing of vehicles and pedestrians. Concessionaire teams were mobilized immediately to provide support for the occurrence. The Mobile Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) and the Fire Department were called to attend to the truck driver. The company reinforces the importance of respecting the existing signage at level crossings and advises drivers and pedestrians to always stop, look, and listen before crossing. As established by the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), the right of way at these intersections belongs to the railway composition.
