Brazil approves National Strategy for Science, Technology, and Innovation 2024–2034

On July 29, 2026, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) published Ordinance No. 10,226, which establishes the National Strategy for Science, Technology, and Innovation for the period from 2024 to 2034. The measure establishes the guidelines that will guide the country's scientific and technological development in the coming years, reinforcing the State's role in promoting innovation.

The strategy will be the ministry's main planning instrument, serving as the basis for the formulation, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies, programs, and projects aimed at strengthening research and innovation in Brazil.

One of the main developments of the new strategy will be the drafting of the Action Plan in Science, Technology, and Innovation for 2027 to 2031. The plan must detail, within 120 days, the initiatives, goals, and practical actions that the government intends to implement to achieve the objectives outlined in the strategy.

To lead this task, the ordinance created a working group coordinated by the executive secretariat of the MCTI. The committee will include experts and representatives from relevant areas, including members of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), and researchers and managers from the sector.

Among the group's responsibilities are defining the methodology and schedule for drafting the plan, coordinating the ministry's units and other actors of the National Science, Technology, and Innovation System, consolidating technical contributions, and approving the final proposal, which will be forwarded to the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

The initiative reflects the government's intention to consolidate a long-term agenda for science and innovation, recognizing that advancements in these areas are fundamental for Brazil's competitiveness and sustainable development.

With the strategy in effect, it is expected that the country will consolidate partnerships between academia, industry, and government, expanding investment in research and fostering the generation of knowledge that can drive strategic sectors and create new employment opportunities.
