Baby is hospitalized in serious condition after suffering burns at a daycare in Paraná

The case happened this Tuesday (16), at the Municipal Center for Early Childhood Education (CMEI) Beatriz Silva Pacheco Gonçalves.

The Municipal Secretariat of Education informed in a note that the child suffered burns during a bath, but that "all necessary measures were taken immediately". Read the full note below.

According to the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu), the baby had second-degree burns on his arms, chest, and head. He was taken to the University Hospital (HU) of Maringá, where he underwent surgery and remains hospitalized. ✅ Follow the g1 Maringá and region channel on WhatsApp The baby's mother, Kethelyn Fernandes, said she was called by the unit's director around 9:00 AM.

"The director called me and said: mom, can you come to the CMEI? Because your son got burned, we were giving him a bath in the shower and he ended up getting burned. [...] I went quickly, it took a matter of two minutes and I was already there. [...] If the teacher says it was shower water, then why didn't she put her hand in first to see if the water was hot, warm, or cold? It wasn't just a little burn", said the mother. Baby had second-degree burns on his head, arm, and chest. Provided/Kethelyn Fernandes The secretary of education of Sarandi, Sheyla Grasiele de Souza Gonçalves, stated that the accident happened at the end of the bath for the child, when the shower was being turned off.

"It was at the moment of the bath. There is a basin where hygiene is performed and she [teacher] was giving him a bath and, even with the shower turned off, it released hot water and then it caused the burn. The baby has sensitive skin, even if we take all the care, unfortunately, it can happen", said the secretary. Samu informed that the baby had blisters characteristic of burns from boiling water.

But it was not possible to confirm if the water was from a shower. "At the location, the child was agitated due to the intense pain of the lesions. We performed potent analgesia with morphine for better comfort and sent him to the burn reference center", informed Samu. The daycare where the accident happened serves about 20 babies aged between five months and one year.

The inspection pointed out that the equipment had been installed recently, about six days ago, after maintenance.

"According to information obtained, the showers were new and were acquired through a bidding process in 2023. They are even new products, in the box.[...] The shower involved in the case was collected and sent for technical expertise", informed the Guard.

According to the Guard, the daycare management contacted the Municipal Secretariat of Education to identify the batch of the equipment used. As a preventive measure, the immediate suspension of the use of all products acquired in the same bidding was determined, until the investigations are concluded.

Delegate José Pacheco informed that he opened an inquiry to investigate the crime of negligent bodily injury, when the crime is committed without intention. The investigation will determine if there was negligence or technical failure in the shower.
