Civil Defense investigates attack on alert system in Brazil The Government of Paraná said that the issuance of the extreme sound alert from the Civil Defense sent to cell phones citing the word "misanthropy" qualifies as an act of terrorism. The situation occurred between Friday night (19) and early Saturday morning (20).
In a note, the State Secretariat of Justice and Citizenship highlighted that the platform was taken offline "after having suffered an invasion and triggered an alert to several regions of the country, ordered remotely by someone outside the National Civil Protection and Defense System". In the note, the state government also mentions that, due to the law and the negative impact caused by the false alert, it is up to the Federal Police to conduct the criminal investigation, and to the Federal Justice to process and judge it. The text ends by saying that the State Secretariat of Justice and Citizenship "awaits with the certainty that all legally appropriate measures will be taken". In a note, the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR) said it is investigating the situation and that the Federal Police is also already mobilized to investigate the unauthorized access to the platform. The National Civil Defense claims that the trigger was done remotely by someone without authorization and may have been the result of a hacker attack, and that the platform used to send the alerts was taken offline at 1:30 am this Saturday (20).
"The National Secretariat of Civil Protection and Defense of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development will trigger the Federal Police and will take steps to reconnect the system as quickly as possible, when all security conditions are re-established", it said in a note.
