5 tips to maintain consistency in workouts during winter

Simple warmup, mobility, and intensity strategies to train safely on cold days

5 dicas para manter a constância nos treinos durante o inverno

1. Progressive warmup

  • Focus: Joint preparation and body temperature elevation.
  • Action: Dedicate a few minutes to dynamic movements before your main workout. Include exercises such as gentle jumping jacks, hip and shoulder rotations, bodyweight squats, and side shuffles. Gradually increase range of motion and speed.
  • Benefit: A proper warmup helps improve joint lubrication and muscle elasticity, and reduces the likelihood of discomfort during exercise.

2. Daily active mobility

  • Focus: Maintaining range of motion.
  • Action: Set aside a few minutes in the morning or before bed for mobility sequences: cat-cow, hip circles, thoracic opening, and gentle posterior chain stretching. Move within a comfortable range without forcing it.
  • Benefit: The tendency to stay more curved and stationary in the cold can shorten certain muscle chains. Daily mobility helps counteract this pattern and keeps the body ready for exertion.

3. Cardio in controlled environments

  • Focus: Continuous cardiovascular conditioning.
  • Action: On days with very low temperatures or strong wind, prefer a treadmill, stationary bike, rower, or indoor classes. Keep the intensity in blocks of a few minutes, alternating moderate effort with brief increases in pace.
  • Benefit: Training in controlled environments reduces exposure to intense cold and allows you to adjust intensity more precisely, ensuring aerobic stimulus without excessive discomfort.

4. Intensity and volume adjustment

  • Focus: Load management and recovery.
  • Action: If you feel greater joint fatigue on colder days, slightly reduce the volume of sets or the load used. Prioritize correct technical execution and respect rest intervals. Use common sense: if a joint hurts beyond muscle exertion, decrease the intensity.
  • Benefit: The body may demand more energy to maintain basal temperature. Adjusting the load helps avoid unnecessary overloads and favors long-term workout continuity.

5. Hydration and layered clothing

  • Focus: Thermoregulation and metabolic support.
  • Action: Drink water throughout the day, not just during your workout. Dress in layers: a base layer that wicks away moisture, a middle layer for heat retention when needed, and an outer layer that blocks wind and moisture. Remove layers as your body warms up during activity.
  • Benefit: The cold can reduce the sensation of thirst, but the need for hydration remains. Layering helps maintain stable body temperature and minimizes discomfort caused by excessive cooling after exercise.

Remember: these are general guidelines. In case of pre-existing health conditions, acute pain, or doubts about ideal intensity, consult a physical education professional and a doctor before starting or changing your routine.
