Practical workout and wellness strategies for cold days

5 dicas para manter a constância física durante o inverno

1. Progressive and prolonged warm-up

Focus: Warm-up.

Action: Before the main workout, dedicate 8 to 12 minutes to dynamic joint mobility movements (such as torso rotations, leg swings, and arm raises) combined with light muscle activation exercises (partial squats, moderate jumping jacks).

Benefit: Gradually increases body temperature and blood circulation, reducing the risk of injuries and preparing the body for exertion, since muscles and joints tend to become stiffer in the cold.

2. Smart clothing layers

Focus: Thermal comfort.

Action: Wear three layers: first base layer (dry-fit), second insulating layer (sweatshirt or fleece), and third windbreaker layer (light jacket). When exercising, remove the third layer as soon as you start sweating and stay dry.

Benefit: Prevents both overheating and excessive heat loss, allowing the workout to take place at a stable body temperature and without discomforts that interrupt the routine.

3. Short and intense workouts in a sheltered environment

Focus: Intensity and practicality.

Action: Prioritize 20 to 30-minute circuits with functional exercises (jumping jacks, jump squats, planks, adapted burpees) performed at home or in a covered area. Alternate effort and rest at a 1:1 ratio (e.g., 40 seconds of work, 40 seconds of rest).

Benefit: Maintains cardiovascular and muscular conditioning even on very cold or rainy days, respecting time limitations and avoiding prolonged exposure to intense cold.

4. Weather-adapted hydration

Focus: Hydration.

Action: Drink room-temperature or slightly warm water (avoid very cold water) before, during, and after the workout. A good reference is to take small sips every 20 minutes of activity, adjusting according to thirst. If the workout lasts more than an hour, consider replenishing electrolytes with coconut water or a sports drink, always in moderation.

Benefit: In the cold, thirst is less noticeable, but dehydration can occur and impair performance. Proper hydration maintains joint lubrication, temperature regulation, and muscle function.

5. Fixed schedule routine and personal reward

Focus: Consistency.

Action: Choose a regular time (even if short) and associate the end of the workout with a pleasant reward for the cold — such as a hot shower, a caffeine-free hot drink, or a relaxation moment with a blanket.

Benefit: Creates a positive trigger that strengthens the habit, combating the natural tendency to abandon activity on colder days. Predictability facilitates mental and physical adaptation throughout the season.
